Professor B.A. Chopade has been working as a Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India from 04/06/2014. He is an outstanding researcher, innovator and academician of international repute. He is great visionary, institution builder, research mentor and very innovative administrator. After completing Ph.D. in Europe and Post-Doctorate research in America, USA, he returned to India and joined University of Pune and developed excellent Department of Microbiology. He established Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB), University of Pune. This is his original and pioneering contribution for higher education in India. Professor Chopade also contributed significantly for development of universities in India. He has mentored 29 Ph.D., 4 M.Phil and 10 Post-Doctoral scholars who are occupying significant research positions in academics and industry all over the world. He has had very distinguished academic and research career and has carved his career entirely on the basis of merit and academic excellence.
Professor Chopade has several national and international academic honors and professional distinctions to his credits. He was the Government of India Scholar at the University of Nottingham, England and obtained a Ph.D. degree in microbiology and molecular genetics (1983-1986), under prestigious National Overseer Scholarship of Govt. of India. It is important to note that this same fellowship was awarded to former President of India Mr. K.R. Narayanan. He was also the recipient of the most prestigious Fogarty International NIH Research Fellowship Award from Govt. of USA for Post-Doctoral research at the University of Illinois at Chicago in genetic engineering (1994-1996). He is also recipient of International Award in Microbiology from International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) in 1986. He is also recipient of most prestigious award of Bronze Medal, from International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM), from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA (2009). He was a visiting scientist at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France and King's College, University of London in 1990.

He has presented more than 170 papers in International and National Conferences and has given large number of plenary lectures. He has made fundamental contributions in the area of gene transfer, plasmid biology, molecular microbiology, nanomicrobiology, virology, biotechnology, nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine. He is on the editorial board of number of peer reviewed journals in India and abroad.
He is outstanding mentor in Microbiology and Biotechnology and 29 Ph.D., 4 M.Phil. and 10 Post-Doctoral scholars completed their research. Currently 5 Ph.D. students are working with him. His 3 students had obtained Young Scientist Awards in 1993 at Stockholm, from International Congress of Chemotherapy (ICC), Europe. He has obtained research grants and funding of more than ₹ 10 crores from national and international funding agencies. He has successfully completed 32 major research projects from various national and international funding agencies. He has developed a new herbal medicine "Infex" which is manufactured by Shrushti Herbal Pharma Ltd., Bangalore. He is a pioneer in the area of Industry-Academia interactions and entrepreneurship in biotechnology and microbiology at IBB, University of Pune as well as at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. He is also pioneer in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and development of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad as well as Universities in India. He has successfully mobilized more than ₹ 25 crores under CSR programme from 2014 till today from various corporate organisations in India. He is on editorial board of Wealth of India Publication series, from CSIR New Delhi, as well as number of research journals.
He was founding Director of Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB), University of Pune from 2006 to 2012. He has established and developed IBB as a unique national institute and as a centre of excellence in research, innovation and teaching and learning in biotechnology in India. He has successfully established an innovative benchmarking of publications in peer reviewed international journals of repute by undergraduate students at IBB, this is unique achievement in the country. This programme was very much successful and was accepted by Govt. of India and started similar programme at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) chain of institutes across the country. He also established most innovative administrative practices with accountability and transparency at IBB, University of Pune.
He was Head of the Department of Microbiology, University of Pune from 1994, 1996-2000 and 2003-2006. He has 36 years of experience in research, innovation, teaching and administration at the University of Pune as well as other university in Great Britain and USA. He was also coordinator of ALIS link programme between British Council London and Department of microbiology, University of Pune (1994-1997). He served as a Professor of Microbiology (1998) and Coordinator of University of Potential Excellence Programme (UPE Phase I & II) of UGC in Biotechnology at University of Pune (2006-2014).

Maximum number of programmes were conducted with record publication of 07 books by university. He was also a member of Govt. of Maharashtra’s Expert Committee for approval of private universities in Maharashtra in 2015, Member of Task force of Govt. of Maharashtra on Globalization of Higher Education of Universities in Maharashtra (2016). Under the distinguished academic and administrative leadership of Professor B.A. Chopade, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University has received a national recognition. In survey of India Today on 5th August, 2015 University has received 18th rank among 800 universities in India and 3rd rank in western India. Similarly in first ever Indian ranking 2016, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by MHRD, New Delhi, our university ranked 87th in the country. 'The Week'- Hansa research survey of best Universities in India in 2016, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University has obtained 55th rank in India and 11th rank among 20 top universities in West Zone of India. FIST programme of Department of Science and Technology (DST) Govt. of India was obtained by Department of Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science in 2016. Our university is a lead university in Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) in Maharashtra. RUSA Advanced Center for Nanosensors is sanctioned with a special grant of ₹ 1.5 crore. Department of Chemistry and Physics obtained SAP programme of UGC in 2016. Similarly Department of Economics, Social Science and Political Science received Center of Potential Excellence in rural development by UGC, New Delhi at national level. This has enabled our university eligible for University of Potential Excellence (UPE) of UGC, New Delhi. This is a great achievement for our university in last one year.
University entered into academic and research collaborations with Stanford University, USA a World's top university in July, 2016. This would enable Dr. BAMU to develop strong collaboration in faculty of science, medicine, technology as well as law. Over the 2 years more than 15 MoUs are signed with universities in Japan, Europe, Australia and USA under his able leadership. This has opened gates for international collaboration. Besides this, large number of MoUs are also signed between many national institutes and universities. The foundation stone of the state-of-the-arts Jamanalal Bajaj Incubation Center proposed to come up at BAMU was laid by the Vice-Chancellor in July, 2016. Research cell, Avishkar cell as well as IPR cell is established in 2016. Besides this, a research cell has been formed to promote research in faculty and students in 2016 with budget of more than ₹ 3 crores. Overall university is progressing by leaps and bounds. He has initiated unique novel concepts of Jalyukta University and Vanyukta University for the first time in the world. He has founded the Gopinathrao Mundhe National Institute of Rural Development (GMNIRD) with its office on the campus of university. This is unique national institute of its kind in India and Govt. of Maharashtra has sanctioned ₹ 150 crore for the same.
Professor Chopade envisages Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University as a modern research University in which synergy between research, innovation, teaching and learning will be fostered which will result into development of innovative minds of University students and meet the challenges of the 21st Century in developing it as a knowledge University and subsequently one of the best University in India as well as one of the first hundred best universities in the world.
