Mahatma Phule (11th April 1827 to 28th November 1890)

  • Jyotirao Govindrao Phule was born in 11th April 1827 into a family that belonged to the agricultural Mali caste in Pune
  • In 1841, he got admission in the Scottish Mission's High School at Poona.
  • Phule completed his English schooling in 1847.
  • He was married in 1840, at the age of 13 with SavitribaiPhule.
  • In 1848 he was started first Girl School, Budhawar Peth in Pune.
  • In 1851 he was started first Untoucheble’s School in Pune.
  • In 1852 he was started Library in Pune.
  • On 24th September 1873, Phule formed Satyashodhak Samaj to focus on rights of depressed groups such women, the Shudra, and the Dalit.
  • He was a founder of many movements

  3. Movement of women's education.
  4. Peasant's movement
  5. Movement against blind faith.
  • Phule's akhandas were organically linked to the abhangs of Marathi Varkari Sant Tukaram. Among his notable published works are:

  • Jyotiba suffered a stroke in 1888 and was rendered paralyzed. On 28th November, 1890, the great social reformer, Mahatma JyotiraoPhule, passed away.
