FDI in India’s Retail Sector: Some Issues

Abstract - Foreign Direct Investment comes to developing countries to exploit their cost and location advantages. A large local market, good infrastructure, cheap labour, the opportunity to repatriate income together work as magnet for attracting FDI.India’s liberal economic policy of 1991 opened doors to FDI. However, FDI in retail was for the first time allowed to enter the Single Brand Retail sector in 2006. It was only in 2012 that FDI was allowed to enter Multi Brand Retail sector.

A Study of Agrarian-Distress in a DroughtProne Region

Abstract -This paper attempts to examine the distress situation among farm households in a drought-prone Marathwada region. The distress is measured in terms of their income from cultivation and their experiences about input delivery, marketing and extension facilities. Marathwada is a drought-prone and backward region of the Maharashtra state. The entire Marathwada region was divided into three regions, namely, resource-rich region, developing region and the core drought-prone region. Three-stage stratified sampling technique was used and the primary data were collected from 530 farm households during the year 2010. It was found that the per capita net annual income from cultivation for the core drought-prone region was Rs.4,825 and it was very much lower when compared to that for the other two sample regions and per capita income for the Marathwada region.

A Study of Landless Agricultural Labourers in Washim District of Maharashtra

Abstract - National Sample Survey (32nd round) estimated that out of total 45.9 crores labourers thenumber of unorganized labourers is around 43.3 crores. Out of this unorganized sector around 26.9 crores labourers were observed as landless agricultural labourers. Several research studies have acknowledged the essential place of landless labourers in rural economy; however they had to grapple with many issues. On this background this research paper aims to undertake the study of landless labourers in Washim District in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra under title “A Study of Landless Agricultural Labourers in Washim District”.
