Department of Marathi

Founded in 1958, the Department of Marathi is one of the oldest departments of the University. The unique feature of this department is its possession of a veritable treasure trove of 4000 rare manuscripts in Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Marathi and Modi belonging to 16th and 17th century besides 70 stone inscriptions and utensils of Mahanubhav period.

The department started in 1965, and has a rich collection of records of Shakespeare’s drama, poetry readings of reputed English and American Poets and men of letters. It also has developed a rich language laboratory and a large number of Foreign Students join the department for higher studies.

This department was established in 1973. The only department in the region to offer Chinese Language. Presently besides Chinese Language the department also offers German and Russian and serves several foreign industrial and business units in providing trained translators and interpreters.

Department of Urdu

A separate Urdu department was introduced as an independent department in April 1999 due to a strong Urdu flavor in the region that had a rich presence of medieval rulers like the “Nizam Shahi” dynasty of Ahmednagar, Nizam of Hyderabad and the Mughal rulers in the 17th and 18th century. The department is actively assisting in the revival of the rich tradition of Urdu poets like Wali and Siraj and promoting new waves in Urdu literature.
